[shared_counts]
Our Lady Assumed into Heaven Patroness of South Africa:
Mary Assumed into Heaven is the Patroness of South Africa, and therefore today’s feast day is one of great celebration for our country. This year has been challenging for our country and those in positions of government, who have had to make difficult decisions to lead us through the Corona Virus plague. Let us confidently entrust our country and our government to Our Lady assumed into Heaven.
Original Consecration to Our Lady Assumed into Heaven from 1952:
The following prayer was circulated in 1952, following the dedication of South Africa to Our Lady Assumed into Heaven. We had previously stated in this article that our country was consecrated to Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, but having further researched it, there was no evidence to support this. Our Lady under this title is the patroness of South Africa:
O Immaculate Virgin, Blessed Mother of God, look down upon thy children gathered at thy feet. We know, O glorious Mother, how the sword of sorrow pierced thy heart when thy Son, Jesus died on Calvary before thine eyes. We rejoice that, for thy devoted life and sufferings bravely borne, Almighty God bestowed upon thee the reward of thy glorious Assumption. We honour thee whom God honoured when, thine earthly sojourn ended, He raised up thy pure and spotless body, that holy temple of the Word made flesh, and joined it with thy soul in everlasting bliss. O Queen assumed into Heaven with one voice we acclaim thee our Heavenly Patroness, and with filial love we consecrate to thee our country and our people. Through thy prayers, O gracious Mother, may thy Son be known and loved throughout South Africa; may His Kingdom flourish in our land, a Kingdom of justice, truth and peace. Teach us to follow in His footsteps, firm in the Faith, obedient to His law, subjecting soul and body to His holy way. That when our mortal life is ended, we may gaze upon His face in Heaven and share, as thou, O Blessed Mother, dost already, the glory of His Resurrection. Amen.
We have great confidence in her patronage and the power given to her by the Blessed Trinity to overcome all pestilence.
It was an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary which was used in a procession by Pope Saint Gregory the Great to overcome a plague effecting Rome during his Pontificate.
Appeal to all Parish Priests, Superiors of Religious Communities and those with lawful authority:
We appeal to all Dioceses, Parishes, Religious Communities to make an act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary using this formula. Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart is a sure and safe refuge for us poor sinners who have confidence in her and fly to her for protection. We also ask Fathers of families to lead their families in true devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and constantly renewing acts of Consecration to her.
